Nancy Jahns

Preamble (Swema) slide projection 2005 …

Nancy Jahns designed a slide projection for the small cinema K.I.E.Z. in Dessau Nord. The title “Vorspann” refers to the place and time of the screening in the cinema’s pre-program, and at the same time to the origin of the images. For this episode, Nancy Jahns chose 75 images from “foreign” material: the opening piece of an old 16mm cinema film. She has separated the black-and-white individual images from their function of effective drama of a cinematic sequence. As stills they now reveal their seemingly enigmatic life of their own. In the slow rhythmic sequence of the projection with slide carousel, the artist creates an unusual sense of time on the cinema screen, in the interplay of duration and transience of the light images. Through distanced observation, Nancy Jahns enables an attentive perception of images in connection with space and time.
